Other collections

Portland History at the Portland Public Library
"Portland Public Library is the top research and preservation resource for the history of the Greater Portland area." Also very strong in Maine historical newspapers.

Catalog of the Maine Historical Society
"At this time, the majority of our library holdings are electronically cataloged, including general history and Maine history books (town, school and church histories, vital records, etc), as well as some manuscript, map, and pamphlet collections." (January 2014) The MHS has a particularly strong collection of historical newspapers.

Library of Congress Subject Headings

A sampling of terms to use in a subject or keyword search of CBBcat, WorldCat, the catalogs of other libraries, or America: History and Life. (Of course, you would substitute the name of your place.) Because some catalog records may include variations on these subject terms, do a keyword search to maximize retrieval of records.
